Three times a Dutch Champion as a young rider, Maikel’s most memorable career moment is winning the Super League Nations Cup in St Gallen alongside his father Eric van der Vleuten, a much-acclaimed rider and Maikel’s biggest career influence.

Maikel’s best performances are coming 4th with his team at the European Championships in Madrid (2011), 2nd at the World Championships in Helsinki (2011) and winning the Nations Cup in St Gallen (2011). He also achieved an individual ranking of 3rd at the Global Champions Tour in Valencia last year. VDL Group Sapphire and VDL Group Verdi have been the best-loved horses of his career. He describes Global Champions Tour as a ‘fantastic tour for the sport.’

In 2012, Maikel was selected for the Dutch Olympic team in London with his stallion VDL Groep Verdi. Maikel along with team mates Marc Houtzager, Gerco Schroder and Jur Vrieling won Olympic Team silver medals. Maikel was the youngest rider on the Olympic podium in 2012 at the tender age of 24 years old.
