Christian took up riding aged 11 and said a lot of his friends were riding at the time and he went to riding club and liked it. Based in Marl, Germany, he has trained with national coach Otto Becker. His international debut was at the European Championships in 1989. Christian lists his hobbies as playing football and harness racing. Among his career highlights are winning the 2003 European Championships and competing at the 2012 Olympic Games. He won team bronze at the Athens Olympics in 2004 and was third at the WEG Aachen 2006 and first in the World Cup at Leipzig in 2011.  His idol is Michael Schumacher and he says his father and Ludger Beerbaum are the most influential people in his career. His brother Dirk and father George were both equestrian athletes. After each win he rewards himself by adding to his personal whisky collection.
